Reporters learned from the Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs yesterday that the city’s autumn harvest has been completed and the winter planting is nearing completion. Data shows that significant achievements have been made in increasing the yield per unit area of autumn grains on a large scale this year. A total of 743,000 mu (about 49,533 hectares) of late rice has been harvested, with the area of autumn grains showing a steady increase. Combined with summer grains and early rice, the city’s grain output is expected to reach the target of 542.5 million kilograms this year, reaching a new level.

This year, days of high temperatures and typhoons were not favorable for grain crops. In spite of that, the promotion and application of a series of improved varieties, advanced cultivation methods and modern agricultural machinery have laid a solid foundation for the increase in grain production throughout the year, according to the Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Since the beginning of this year, the city has thoroughly implemented the action plan to increase the yield per unit area of major grain and oil crops on a large scale. It has established 133 high-yield demonstration areas for rice, thus promoting balanced yield increase on a large scale. The rise in yield per unit area has contributed more than 70% to the overall grain production increase.

While the autumn harvest was in progress, winter planting was carried out sequentially to lay a solid foundation for a bumper harvest next year. According to the agricultural scheduling, at present, the sowing rates for winter wheat and winter rapeseed have both exceeded 90%. The sowing area of rapeseed is 166,000 mu (about 11,067 hectares), and that of wheat is 514,000 mu (about 34,267 hectares), slightly higher than the previous year.

The Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs stated that our city will focus on both “stabilizing the planting area and increasing the yield per unit area” and continue to promote the increase in the yield per unit area of grain and oil crops on a large scale. Among them, a number of varieties with stable yields under adverse conditions, high yields and high quality will continue to be screened and promoted; a number of technical models that ensure high and stable yields, are eco-friendly and highly efficient, and suitable for mechanized operation will continue to be integrated; a number of new agricultural business entities and socialized service organizations will continue to be guided to play an exemplary role in promoting yield-increasing measures, ensuring effective implementation of key initiatives and promoting the increase in yield per unit area on a large scale.
